Internal Thermal Gate Cut Mould Design
Key Points:
As gates like submarine type, horn gate, pinpoint gate with hot-runner can depart stub bar automatically, they require difficult machining and cost higher. So when we do the mould design thermal degating is a concern and for convenience of drop-off we make a wall cut at gate areas.

As in the picture of mold cavity below that the part in green is the insert, make clearance for the cavity plate and use screw to fit the insert on plate. The convex parts of insert are designed in angle of 8~10 degrees as the cutters.

Area in pink is the core insert which can be the degating insert that four convex parts represent the cutters must be in 8~10 degrees, with channel and gates molded on insert.

In-mold gate cut mould needs non standard mould base that no screws to fit clamp plate and cavity plate and the guide pillars are mounted in clamp plate. Make a stop block of 3~5mm for limiting the distance of inserts moving up, spring on screw for assist.
And get a parting lock between cavity plate and core plate, so is for degating inserts between them. Make a hole to set spring at core plate which is just the bottom end of core insert for assist of cutting the gate, thus stop block is also needed between core and core insert.


Internal thermal gate cutting mould inserts design notes:
Diameter of cavity insert should be 0.03mm more than that of core insert which is better for departing of gate and product;
Parting lock is necessary to prevent inserts from departing when mold is open;
A pokayoke(fool proof) for inserts is better to set up.
Motion concept analysis based on in-mold gate cut mould structure: when mold is open, the spring at core insert bottom provides strength to push gate cutting inserts of cavity and core to move up. As there is parting lock to get gate and product departed while insert and core doesn’t move together. After the inserts cutting down the gates, the cavity plate and core plate open and the product is ejected by ejector pins.
