Product Introduction

What Is Overmolding?

Using a special bespoke injection molding technique called overmolding, several materials can be seamlessly combined to create a single part or product.

Using either a single-shot (insert molding) or two-shot (multiple-shot molding) technique, it usually consists of a hard, plastic-base component covered with a thin, malleable, rubber-like thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) outer layer or other materials. Also we have made PC optical part overmolding with PC/ABS bezel molds.

Advantages For Overmolding?

Improve performance and functions

Better product performance is one of the main justifications for designing and producing a plastic overmolded product or part. TPE, TPR, and TPV are the perfect materials to create a non-slip, soft grip. This is particularly helpful for items that need to be sensitive to touch, such medical supplies, surgical tools, and sealing trim for vehicle decoration.Additionally, a TPE surface serves as an environmental barrier, lowering shock, vibration, and noise, all of which are important advantages of the overmold process, safeguarding a product and prolonging its life.

Increased shelf appeal

In addition to producing an aesthetically pleasing surface, overmolding allows for a wide range of color options and can be engineered for various finishes, making a product stand out from the competitors.

Consider a transparent TPE surface with a company's logo, slogan, or operating guidelines on it. Additionally, these can be overmolded into substrates that include patterns or customizations.

Lower production cost

Overmolding is a unique technology that reduces production costs and offers multiple benefits. How? By using a single overmold tool rather of two or more molds, overmolding eliminates the need for additional manufacturing stages.

For instance, over-molding in the automotive industry removes the requirement for extra finishing processes (priming, painting, or coating) as well as injection molding and assembly for parts (such gaskets or bumpers).

Whether Is It Right to Choose Over-mold?

Overmolding plastic is appropriate for a wide range of uses. However, before deciding if it's the best option for your project, a number of things need to be taken into account:

Product design

Materials selection

Injection molding tooling quotes and equipment budgets

Labor costs

Production volume

From selecting materials to handling high volumes to producing high-quality parts, the over-molding process requires special skills and experience.

You may better weigh the benefits and drawbacks of employing over-molding on your project by working with a skilled custom injection molder, particularly one with knowledge of scientific molding. Working together, the right partner helps you make the best choice for your application and financial situation.
