The photos show grille injection moulding parts for Soueast SUV DX9 model that is designed by Pininfarina and equipped with a 1.8T turbo-charger engine applied BMW technology. The grille is inlaid with Soueast new logo for the model and sized 1013*324*151 for which we made the injection mould with mirror like finish parting surface. As it is a high gloss part, we are about to introduce the injection molding process with steam assisted mould.

High-gloss Part Injection Moulding with Steam Assisted

 

This technology uses steam assisted system and sets up heating and cooling channels in tool to control its temperature field so that the mold temperature can quickly go up and down, with injection moulding process conditions improved. Thus the molten resin flows in the best status when injected which effectively avoids weld lines, silver marks, etc., caused by flow ability decrease and uneven cooling in traditional moulding process in comparison. Moreover, it reduces product surface roughness so that subsequent painting procedure can be canceled, saving production cost and cycle time.

 

Main process for steam injection moulding

 

When the mold gets closed, let hot steam enter the heating&cooling channel to raise the mold temperature till set value and then inject molten polymer. As soon as packing shifting to cooling, drive residual steam out of channel by air pressure and put in cold water to reduce mold temperature till set value. The last step is to blow air into the channel to get water out thereafter, take part off as mold open.

 

Plastic part structure design

 

Steam injection moulding is one of technologies (RHCM) for making high gloss parts without weld lines, whose part structure design is different from conventional ones. Taking high gloss grille injection moulding for example, optimal design for draft angle, fillet transition, fastening units,etc..is necessary to fit the high-gloss mold features.

 

Moulding simulation and gating system optimization

 

As steam injection mold temperature goes high and changes significantly, the runners layout is quite different from that of normal one. Mold flow analysis should be carried on so that we can do optimal designs for gating system and cooling system for ideal filling and great product quality.

 

Advantages for injection molding with steam assisted compared with normal process

 

1\ Getting rid of weld lines, silver marks

The high mould temperature brings molten polymer better fluidity and adequate filling ability which effectively prevent those defects. Though bubbles occur at molten end but would not get solid when meeting the mold surface for its temperature higher than that of polymer thermal deformation, while pressure could squeeze bubbles, defeating silver marks.

2\ Saving time and cost

The steam injection molded parts remain natural gloss (specular gloss), needless of sequent procedures like polish and painting, thus production efficiency get improved a lot.

3\ Avoiding warp

The rapid shifting of mold temperature by steam injection molding makes molten resin heated and cooled more even, which reduces the residual stress so that warp can be avoided.

4\ The great fluidity is especially suitable for thin wall plastic product (less than 0.5mm) molding.

5\ Environment-friendly medium can be recycled

Through special auxiliary equipment, steam and cold water as medium for heating cooling, water can be recycled.
